From Poverty to the Pentagon: Paul Lawrence Vann’s Journey to Influence

More than anything, I wanted to succeed, not for fame or fortune, but because I was determined to break the cycle of poverty I was born into. As one of ten children raised by hardworking parents who earned very little, I learned early on that if I wanted a different life, I would have to lead myself there.

That foundational belief in self-leadership became my compass. It guided me through becoming a first-generation high school and college graduate, and eventually, into the United States Air Force. I went on to earn two masters degrees while serving in the USAF.

While still in college, I was selected for a rigorous six-week basic training program with the U.S. Air Force. Upon completion, I returned to campus, cross-enrolled at North Carolina State University, and two years later, was commissioned as a second lieutenant. I went on to serve 22 years as a USAF officer, leading both military and federal civilian teams—and completing every leadership development program the Air Force offers.

I served 12 consecutive years at the Pentagon, and served as a Capitol Hill Fellow in the U.S. House of Representatives, where I advised a member of Congress on national security and defense policy. I retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

After retiring, I launched Wealth Building Academy, LLC, a global leadership development consultancy. Our mission is simple: help organizations and individuals become leaders of influence. We equip teams to develop leaders at every level, retain top talent, increase productivity, and drive sustainable growth—while aligning with the organization's broader vision.

Today, I’m proud to serve as a keynote speaker, trainer, and three-time #1 best-selling author. I've spoken on stages across the globe—from Canada, Paris, France, to India, Ukraine, and Kenya—inspiring audiences with the message that leadership isn’t inherited. It’s developed.
